Hundreds participate in poker run

THE VILLAGES — Party with a purpose. That’s the Parrot Heads’ motto and that’s exactly what they did Saturday during their fourth annual poker run.

At 1 p.m. more than 750 Villagers and members lined up their golf carts at The Villages Polo Club. Next, they showed their $5 tickets, grabbed the tally sheet with station shops, and crossed their fingers for good luck.

The event was a fundraiser to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Their goal was to raise $6,000 or more.

“Our club is about fun — we’re all Jimmy Buffet fans — but this is a benefit for us because we can get together for charity,” said Rich Pribula, event chair.

Participants were sent to golf country clubs and recreation centers within The Villages to pick one card from a single deck. They had until 4 p.m. and the winner would receive $100.

“I got two pairs,” Village of Virginia Trace resident Steve Heathcoat said. “I came because it’s for a great cause.”

Myron Storms joked with friends about his method of play.

“I’ll definitely win with my five aces,” the Village of Virginia Trace resident said. “No way. I didn’t get anything.”

Reggie Samuels unfortunately ended up with a bad hand, but said the poker run was well worth it.

“I’m new to The Villages, but now I’m more familiar with where certain recreation centers are,” said the Village of Hadley resident.

Frank and Diane Mastalka, also new residents from Hadley, enjoyed themselves.

“We might join the Parrot Heads,” Frank said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Once the competition was over, players enjoyed hot dogs, snacks and live music until 6 p.m.

There was also a silent auction for best of 56 Easter baskets. The rest would be sold during a 50/50 chance drawing.

For Marty Walsh, the event was for a cause dear to his heart.

“My wife Susan had cancer last year and recovered from it,” the Parrot Head from the Village of Santiago said. “I joined the club because they do so much for others and have a good time.”
